Marion County 9-1-1 Agency ProfileIn November of 1990, the citizens of Marion County, Illinois, voted in a $1.25 monthly surcharge on their telephone bills to fund the 9-1-1 system. The Marion County 9-1-1 system went live on March 6, 1996. Today the system handles over 12,000 9-1-1 calls a year from the 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP or 9-1-1 Dispatch Centers) at the Centralia and Salem Police Departments. Wireless Phase I Service is available from the (5) carriers serving Marion County, Illinois. Each wireless subscriber in the State of Illinois is charged 75 cents, with 41 cents of that being returned to the local 9-1-1 systems. The revenue received will be used for the continued operation of the wireless 9-1-1 service.
